Elvis Presley fans can look forward to a number of films featuring the rock 'n' roll legend as part of a weekend of musicals lined up for DStv's TCM.

Among them is 1957's Jailhouse Rock

, directed by Richard Thorpe, in which Presley plays Vince Everett, a man serving a year in jail for manslaughter after accidentally killing someone in a brawl.

His cellmate is former folk singer Hunk Houghton (Mickey Shaughnessy), who introduces him to the record industry.

On his release from prison, Vince tries to launch a singing career with the help of love interest Peggy Van Alden (Judy Tyler).

Jailhouse Rock, to be seen at 10.10am on Saturday and repeated at 1.10am on Sunday, was Presley's third film and produced another successful soundtrack.

Word is that Presley grew very close to co-star Tyler during filming and after she died tragically in a car crash just days after the film wrapped, he refused to watch the film as he found it far too upsetting.

Also on the line-up is Viva Las Vegas

, a 1964 success that also features Ann-Margret. It is scheduled for TCM at 12.35pm on Sunday and will be repeated at 1.05am on Monday.

Directed by George Sidney, this one has Presley as a racing driver, Lucky Jackson, who arrives in Vegas to compete in the Grand Prix. However, his car needs a new engine before he can challenge his arch rival on the track.

Taking a job as a casino waiter to raise funds, Lucky still finds time to win the heart of swimming instructor Rusty Martin (Ann-Margret), win the big race and take a honeymoon in Monaco.

Viva Las Vegas proved to be one of Presley's most popular movies with a soundtrack that features If You Think I Don't Need You, The Lady Loves Me, I Need Somebody To Lean On, C'mon Everybody and the memorable title track.

Presley and Ann-Margret did not confine their chemistry to the screen, embarking on a brief affair during filming.

Another Presley movie to be seen this weekend on TCM, at 11.20pm on Sunday, is It Happened at the World's Fair

. It was made in 1962 and also features Gary Lockwood and Joan O'Brien.

Directed by Norman Taurog, the movie revolves around two crop-dusting pilots having romantic intrigues at the Seattle World's Fair.

Among other musicals tagged for the weekend special on TCM are The Wizard of OZ, Fame, Anchors Aweigh, Seven Brides For Seven Brothers, Meet Me In St Louis, Sik Stockings, Singin' in the Rain, Ziegfeld Follies and High Society.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, note that a new series of LIFE is set to start on M-Net at 7.30pm, replacing Eli Stone.

The series is a gritty, yet absorbing crime drama about an unusual detective, called Charlie Crews, who gets a new lease on life after he is released from prison for a crime he didn't commit.

He then becomes an atypical detective, with a Zen-like approach, whose mission it becomes to investigate the murder for which he was mistakenly accused.

In this new season, Crews' path to the truth takes unexpected turns.

Finally, it's worth noting that the 1992 film version of Michael Frayn's classic farce, Noises Off

, which is soon to be staged in Durban by the KickstArt Company - it runs at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre from August 16 to September - is to be seen on DStv's M-Net Stars at 1.35pm tomorrow, 3.35pm on Saturday and 5.45pm on Sunday.

This fun-filled movie explores the rivalries and misfortunes of a chaotic, bickering touring theatre company and showcases all the backstage chaos during one of their productions.

The cast includes Michael Caine, Carol Burnett, Christopher Reeve, John Ritter, Marilyu Henner, Denholm Elliot and Desperate Housewives' Nicollette Sheridan.
