GOLDFISH: THE SINGERS

One of the best aspects of Goldfish is their unusual, but excellent singers. Think Sakhile Moleshe on Fort Knox and Cruisin' Through from Perceptions of Pacha. Or Monique Hellenberg on their biggest hit to date, This is How it Goes.

Well, Dave and Dom have stuck with these two singers on Get Busy Living and brought in another female on the title track.

"Of the artists we work with, we never get involved with anyone who is not as visionary as us," explained Dave. In fact, the duo believe in Moleshe so much that he is an integral part of their live shows all over the world.

The five musicians met at UCT School of Music where Sakhile started jamming with the guys.

His soulful vocals can be cynical, yet sexy and inviting - a perfect match for the Goldfish lyrics.

"I really enjoyed recording this time, especially the opening track on the album, Crunchy Joe. I like it."

Crunchy Joe plays on all these sexual food innuendos, in a playful way. Monique Hellenberg is |haunting on Call Me, a bittersweet track about the push and pull of new relationships and the games people often play. There are echoes of Portishead at their most angsty in the first chorus.

"I am currently writing my own music," says the slight-built girl about her future plans. "It's mostly jazz and I am hoping to launch my solo career pretty soon."

Newcomer Emily Bruce is the one leading the way with the title track. During the interview I get her to sing a line from the chorus and the whole restaurant stops and stares in awe and recognition. Emily grins in delight. Her voice is commanding and suggestively funky. She is currently recording her second album as a jazz singer.

She has also formed a new band called Free Quincy, which is an original house music project.

"My template is to have a large discography," she says. - Therese Owen
