KKNK honours the best with Kanna Awards

Each year a list of artists and productions are selected by an arts panel to reward the best at the Klein Karoo Arts Festival (KKNK).

The winners were announced recently and received the following Kannas:

Kanna for best production: Die Storm (which will be staged at Aardklop later this year)

Herrie-Kanna popularity prize as selected by audiences: Amanda Strydom and Coenie de Villiers in Ons Loop die Pad (watch out for this if you're a fan, they travel it every once in a while)

Kanna for best actor: Stian Bam (Die Storm, Festen and Slaghuis)

Kanna for best direction: Heinrich Reisenhofer (Festen, which will also be travelling to Aardklop with Reisenhofer, confirming that he will hopefully be participating in more Afrikaans festivals in the future).

Kanna for best actress: Vinette Ebrahim (Boesman & Lena)

Kanna for best technical achievement: Marthinus Basson for the design of Die Storm

Kanna for best musical theatre: Chris Chameleon (Volkleurmannetjie)

Kanna for best achievement in dance theatre: Athena Mazarakis and Craig Morris (Attachments 1-7 which will be going to Grahamstown, as well as doing a short season in Jozi later this year)

Kanna for best classical music achievement: Avigail Bushakovitz (Vioolmosaïek)

Kanna for best contemporary music: Schalk Joubert and Kayamandi (further performances will depend on whether he can get his extensive band together, but catch it if you can)

Kanna for best performance at the Huisgenoot-musiekplaas and Absa Plein: The Bala Brothers

Kanna for best short film: Bitter Water

Kanna for best film: Ouma se Slim Kind (currently on circuit)

Kanna for visual art: Adriaan van Zyl (posthumously)

Slurpie-Kanna for the best newcomer: Deidre Venter for text (Verwagtings)

Sarie-Kanna for the most inspirational woman at the festival: Saartjie Botha

Afrikaans Onbeperk prizes: Poet Wilma Stockenström (lifelong contribution) and writer Marlene van Niekerk (who is also on the shortlist of the Sunday Times Fiction and Non-Fiction list, as well as the only woman listed for innovative thinking)

Special Kanna: Opera singer May Abrahamse for her lifelong contribution to the arts.
