Fashion designer Marc Jacobs landed himself in hot water on social media following his Spring 2016/2017 Summer collection show at New York Fashion Fashion.

Models took to the runway at with their hair styled in dreadlocks with a variety of colours.

Dreadlocks are traditionally worn by men and women of colour. However, the style has recently become mainstream among white people, too. But actress Amandla Stenberg pointed out in her now-iconic “Don't Cash Crop My Cornrows” video, braids and dreadlocks are “not merely stylistic. They're necessary to keep black hair neat.”

When Jacobs posted behind the scenes's pictures to his official Instagram account, fashion lovers took to the designers comments informed the designer that they were not impressed with his choice of hair style for his models. Many felt that the he was guilty of cultural appropriation.

Jacobs made the situation worse when he replied to a post by writing to those who have criticised him for cultural appropriation saying, “funny how you don't criticise women of colour for straightening their hair”.

Social media didn't take kindly to these remarks and let their thoughts be heard.
