Actor and comedian Siv Ngesi set off a social media storm on Thursday after he posted a controversial tweet about the removal of the Cecil John Rhodes statue at UCT.
“Yes #RhodesHasFallen but you are still a Kaffier in many of their eyes!” he tweeted.
His tweet inspired the #SivNgesiMustFall hashtag and caused him to trend on the network.
Here are some responses:
@TheGabi tweeted: WTF Siv, this is so irresponsible of you mxim.
@Miss_npk: Who needs TV when you have Twitter? #SivNgesiMustFall vs @iamSivN is entertainment enough! All I need is popcorn and a couch.
@MeliLumko: @iamSivN is the human equivalent of armpits. Literally no one is proud of him. Try hard coon.
@YoliYoli: @iamSivN The goal was never to change racists. Removal of the statue means 1) students do not have to walk by a false hero.
@DJMager7: Never in his wildest dreams would @iamSivN have thought he would be trending when the subject involved an erection falling.
@Eusebius: Dear #BlackTwitter In the unfortunate event that #SivNgesiMustFall succeeds, SHOTGUN taking his six-pack before he joins Cecil John Rhodes!
@Kgatliso-Ramose: Mugabe must take Siv Ngesi to Matapas and bury him next to his friend #SivNgesiMustFall.
@YaredTheGuy: I low key wanna fight that Siv guy.
@i4inno: I think Siv Ngesi hates being black that guy wishes he was white…
@GS_Ntsonga: I am not a hater of people, but Siv Ngesi, I’d pay a lot of money to get into a (locked) cage with him.
@MsPerrett: With chopsticks and wasabi RT “@ImKhweziN: Black twitter is having Siv Ngesi for lunch.”
Ngesi refused to apologise and tweeted in response: “I have been in trouble on Twitter before and I have apologised, because I was wrong! I am not retracting my statement this time! Voetsek.”
