In the entire first decade of the Oscars' animated feature category, which launched in 2001, only one woman - "Persepolis" creator Marjane Satrapi - received a nomination.
It's a measure of just how much has changed that on Tuesday, women received nods for four of the five animated feature nominees.
The 2018 Academy Award animation nominees include GKIDS's "The Breadwinner," directed by Irish filmmaker Nora Twomey ("The Secret of Kells"), and Good Deed's "Loving Vincent," co-directed and co-written by Dorota Kobiela, who studied painting in Warsaw.
"We're delighted that Nora is in the limelight this year, of course," "Breadwinner" producer Tomm Moore, a two-time Oscars nominee, told The Washington Post on Tuesday morning, "as well as her talented screenwriter Anita Doron and indeed, the book's author, Deborah Ellis, and our executive producer Angelina Jolie.

I'm delighted for the whole team." "The Breadwinner," about an Afghan girl who poses as a boy to help her family, also features the voice of Canadian actress Saara Chaudry.
Among the other nominees, a powerhouse behind Disney/Pixar's "Coco" was producer Darla K. Anderson, who went on the creative team's first research trips to Mexico; producer Ramsey Ann Naito, a veteran of the Maryland Institute College of Art, helped deliver Fox's "The Boss Baby" after taking the book project to director Tom McGrath.
The production team behind the fifth nominee, Fox/Blue Sky's "Ferdinand," includes Lori Forte and Lisa Marie Stetler. Its nominated director is Carlos Saldanha, best known for the "Ice Age" franchise and "Rio."
The Academy Awards ceremony will be March 4.
