Avengers break SA box office records
The 19th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe took in nearly R24.6 million at the South African box office, with more than 287000 attendances for its opening weekend, including Thursday night previews.
This debut ranks as the biggest industry opening weekend in South African box office history.
Last Friday also saw Avengers: Infinity War take in more than R8.4m, in the biggest industry opening day at the local box office.
Elsewhere on the continent, Avengers: Infinity War has become the biggest opening weekend of all time in West Africa with more than R4.8m.
The film achieved the biggest April and second highest opening weekend (after Marvel Studios’ Black Panther) in East Africa with R2.9m.
Avengers: Infinity War brings to the screen the ultimate, deadliest showdown of all time.
The Avengers and their super hero allies must be willing to sacrifice all in an attempt to defeat the powerful Thanos before his blitz of devastation and ruin puts an end to the universe.
Anthony and Joe Russo direct the film, which is produced by Kevin Feige.
Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Michael Grillo, Trinh Tran, Jon Favreau, James Gunn and Stan Lee are the executive producers.
Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely wrote the screenplay.
Also in cinemas, Marvel Studios’ Black Panther continued its historic run at the South African box office with the film passing an unprecedented R105m with nearly 1.4 million attendances.
