Being a female rapper in a male dominated industry can be quiet daunting – but not for Anesca Moodley.

Performing under the stage name IceNess, this 20 year old has her sights set high and isn’t going to allow such stereo-types get in the way of her fame.

IceNess recently released her first single, “Welcome 2 My World” and has been performing in various nightclubs and events in the city since.

She has also released a music video titled “Ice Shelf”, which features Durban’s most prominent spots like the North Beach Skate Park, a few graffiti parks and Blue Lagoon.

With a passion for rhythm and poetry since her childhood IceNess said although the industry is tough on newcomers, her gutsy attitude and thick skin is enough to get her to the top.

“I've always had a passion for poetry since I was in primary school so it comes naturally. I took an interest in rap because I like to play around with words. Euphoria. That's the word to describe how I feel when I jot down lyrics and like what I hear.

“I remember having a song-book back in primary school. For now I am enjoying hip hop but I'm definitely planning and prepping to branch out into electro house, deep house, RNB and pop. There's never a limit. It's always good to test different waters and see where you're most comfortable in and what works for you,” she said.

IceNess said it’s all about confidence, an eagerness to learn and be taught that sets her apart from the rest.

“Although I have my own flow and original sound, I still draw inspiration from other artists like Kendrick Lamar, J Cole and Nasty C, who have specific attributes that set them apart. You’re never too old to learn,” said the arts and drama student.

She said challenges she faced in the music industry included getting a studio with the best equipment and a good sound engineer and producer.

“Even with these challenges I’m doing well so far, I've been making use of local studios that serve more than it's purpose. I've recently found a good producer so expect to hear a positive change. Another thing to worry about is live performances. It's always nerve wrecking when it comes to live performances because you never know what technical difficulties might come your way so you've always got to be prepared for the worst while you pray for the best,” said IceNess.

IceNess has worked with up coming artists such as Ryan (BIP), D.Lite and JTO from 2 Dimension who are signed to an international record label called Black Crown entertainment.

“I'm currently working on a project with Deejay SA and DJ Super T. It's not easy working with artists when music isn't their first priority the way it is to me so I've learnt a lot about how to decide who I work with and who not to work with. Working with 2 Dimension is an absolute pleasure. To be in studio with artists who have the same passion for music as you do is an amazing feeling,” she said.

IceNess has definitely caught the eye of many, and SM looks forward to some amazing rap from her.
