Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage became the first female artist to win the Best African Act on Sunday at the MTV Europe Music Awards.

The 'Get It Now' singer was nominated alongside South African pop artist Shekhinah and gqom kings Distruction Boyz and made history by becoming the first female artist to walk away with the award.  

Savage posted a picture with her awards on Instagram, alongside the caption, "Almighty God, you ARE so faithful. My savage soldiers, you did this for us. You’ve stuck with me through the roller coasters, THANK YOU. To my amazing team, this is just the beginning. African Woman, this is for US I’ve been through a lot but I’ve kept my head up and weathered the storm because I know some little girl somewhere is dreaming like I did."

The awards show held at the Bizkaia Arena, Spain celebrates Europian and international music artists with former Fifth Harmony member Camila Cabello coming out on top with four awards. 

And the feuding female rappers Cardi B walking away with Best New Artist and Nicki Minaj walking away with two awards, Best Hip Hop artist and Best Look.
