In the first verse of his song, Americans, Mzansi muso, Cassper Nyovest raps: “We as Africans [are] trying to kick butt/But they give us our BET backstage/Like we less great.” But that’s about to change.
Last night, it was announced that the Best International Act category - which now pits European and African acts against each other - will be handed out on the main stage during the channel’s award ceremony. In the past, the winners of this category gave their acceptance speeches way before the celeb-filled televised event.
“I’m very honoured to be nominated,” Cassper said. “It’s not two categories anymore [...]. Steff is my friend and I’m familiar with Stormzy’s music so for me, it’s like I’m moving in the right direction and it means consistency.” He also expressed his excitement about the possibility of accepting his award as Nicki Minaj watches him mount the stage. Okay.
Cass is up against: Distruction Boyz, Davido, Tiwa Savage, Fally Ipupa, Booba, Dadju, J Hus, Stefflon Don and Stormzy. The BET Awards take place in Los Angeles on June 24 but will only be televised on DStv two days later.
