Since 2010, the Oppikoppi music festival has bestowed the honour of tribute shows to some of South Africa’s veterans in the music industry.

From Valiant Swart to Ready D, Bra Hugh and even Mafikizolo, the list of honourees have been diverse.

The festival, which is titled Oppikoppi 24: Nomakanjani this year, will continue in this diverse vein when they pay tribute to the legend, Oliver Mtukudzi. The Zimbabwean artist who has been performing for 41 years is deserving of the honour.

The folks over at Oppikoppi had this to say about him: “Here is a fair warning: All too often we heap praise on others to realise our own appetite for self-indulgence. It is at times such as these that words like legend, icon and stalwart are bandied about with no real relevance.

"On the other hand, sometimes the appreciation and tributes are sincere: Oliver Mtukudzi merits double helpings of love, thank you’s and legendary status belt-driven accolades.”

Oppikoppi takes place from August 9 to 11 in Northam, Limpopo.
