“We’re playing three shows in South Africa,” Katy Perry yells. “So we’re gonna play all the songs you’ve been waiting to hear!” The crowd roars but she saves the song about being louder, louder than a lion for last before an encore.

The California Gurl brought her " Witness: The Tour" show to the TicketPro Dome on Wednesday night. Perry put on colourful show as she performed her hit songs "Hot N Cold" (wearing an LED bra that lights up the lyrics on her chest),  "Pendulum", "Dark Horse", "Part of Me", "Bon Appetit" and "I Kissed A Girl", among others. She only sang a snippet of "Last Friday Night", though.

Katy will perform a sold-out show on Thursday and take to the stage one more time on Friday. Instead of giving us a medley of hits and then performing new songs off her 2017 "Witness" album, Katy tried to tell a story that starts with her idea of Freedom.

It ends, after repeated requests for an encore, with her lying belly-down, then jumping up and down on a gigantic human hand and belting out Firework. I must admit, I expected there to be more fireworks and fanfare at this point of the show but there was just a lot of confetti.

This fits in with the eccentric world she has created as a part of her tour. There are stilt walkers, a shark that dances with her, pop art references and more. But at times, the set is so busy that Katy either blends in or is dwarfed by the colourful chaos.

There’s a theatrical element to the show that appeals to kids and there will definitely be kids everywhere you look. Katy loves the kids. But the tight band that arranges her songs so that they harken to pop-rock nostalgia reminiscent of Cyndi Lauper and early Janet Jackson caters for the grownups.

It was also refreshing to see the superfan who won VVIP tickets through Joox, the streaming platform that sent us to the concert, brought her boyfriend, BFF and even her mom to the concert.
