Having spent most of his career surrounded by beautiful women, it’s not surprising that George Kotsiopoulos cracked The Hollywood Reporter’s Top 25 most powerful stylists in Hollywood list. And he holds his own among his opinionated celebrity female co-hosts on E!’s Fashion Police. Debashine Thangevelo chatted to him about his spell on the show, his new book and forthcoming fashion line…

IT is always such a delight chatting with George Kotsiopoulos – neck deep in an industry famed for its cattiness, he remains the consummate gentleman and professional with his wardrobe appraisals.

And his distinctive get-up-and-go disposition explains how he is able to juggle so many things, including cameo roles in The Young and the Restless – back when he worked on their online fashion and lifestyle magazine – and in Iron Man 3.

The fashion connoisseur has also been a sought-after guest on a string of Hollywood shows.

After 2010, that fame was accelerated when he joined the inimitably sarky Joan Rivers, the demure Giuliana Rancic and uber-venomous Kelly Osbourne (cough, aka Lady Gaga’s new BFF), now that she looks the part of a glamour puss.

Four years on, he is still loving it.

“When I first started working on Fashion Police, I said I never wanted to go to bed on a Sunday dreading Mondays. And I don’t. I love it. The styles change. The fun is how it is put together. I love what I do. I’m so lucky to go on to the set every week. I am very blessed and I never get bored.”

But he also has other things on the go. His first book, Glamorous by George, was released this year. It was about two and a half years in the making.

“The book is about creating movie star style,” he notes. “I was inspired by being on Fashion Police. The ultimate compliment you can give any women is to say that they look like a movie star.”

He continues: “Women are getting their fashion from (celebrity) housewives. It is not about wearing stilettos in a grocery store. It is about putting in a bit more effort. The book covers hair, fashion and etiquette.”

Expanding on the book, he says: “There is a great chapter called dressing by decades.”

He reflects on how the past 20 years have been a regurgitation of the fashion of the past.

Kotsiopoulos continues: “I look at Jane Fonda to Rita Hayworth to Lana Turner to Mia Farrow, Sharon Stone and Sophia Loren. It is great for many who aren’t familiar with the themes – they can now see how fashion has started with me.”

As for the celebrities who get the thumbs up for their fashion sensibilities, he says, “There is Margot Robbie, she is from Australia. She wore this fabulous Gucci dress to the Golden Globes. I think she is definitely one to watch.

“As far as the guys go, Theo James from Divergent is one to look out for as well.”

Hoping to return to South Africa again – he visited about two years ago – Kotsiopoulos expressed his designs on bagging his own show.

He reveals: “I would hopefully love to have my own show at some point. I’m also in the process of doing my own line. It will be just for women. It is going to be glamorous, of course – need I say more?”

As the brand style editor for Gap, he is also part of the ad campaigns. He laughs: “I get my hands in everything.”

Asked about Hollywood’s worst-dressed celebs of late, he very politely responds: “You know what, I don’t like talking about the worst dressed. They are already down to begin with. I hate to kick someone when they down. Besides, there are people best dressed one week and worst dressed another.”

He points out: “Overall, Jennifer Lopez always looks fantastic. I love Rihanna’s style. And Sandra Bullock has been looking incredible in the past six to seven months.”

As I have said, he is ever the gentleman. With such an affable personality and the Midas touch when it comes to style – it is easy to see why his popularity continues to soar as he expands his brand. Talk about trending!
