Hollywood beckoned, but the box is where Fok shines

If the face looks familiar, it should. Kenneth Fok has been in Yizo Yizo 3, Zero Tolerance 2, Skilpoppe and, more recently, Jozi H. And now viewers will get to see the South African-born actor in a menacing role as Liu in Egoli.

Tonight caught up with Fok who, some time ago, went West in search of fame and fortune in Hollywood.

Of the experience, he shared: "I debuted as an extra in a Bond movie, but it was difficult to gain a foothold in the industry. I did some 'unmentionable' things - although I did keep my clothes on (laughs) - and I featured in a few music videos."

Back home, Fok made his foray into television with Shooting Pinks, a short film on M-Net. Of the handful of small roles he has bagged since, he has played a member of a triad, a gay man, a love interest and an anaesthetist.

However, Egoli is his first meaty role.

What does he enjoy most about playing Liu, Yin's ex-boyfriend?

"He is ruthless, callous and a control freak. As an actor, you don't have the everyday licence to play a character so opposite to yourself," Fok explained.

Most of Fok's scenes are with co-stars Dineke Scholtz (Zanele Greyling) and Marlon Roelfze (Shaun Gillian).

"Egoli is the first multi-cam show I've done and it was a huge learning curve, because it is more different and technical than films.

"But having a lot of support from the other actors and the director was quite helpful."

On how he is finding the television industry and whether he is bagging the roles he wants, he said: "I'm a Chinese male born in SA and I think it is inevitable that you are going to be typecast in whatever country you are in.

"But there has been a noticeable shift in the roles I've been cast for, especially with Jozi H coming about. Chinese are generally the last minority to be recognised in television and I am trying to get exposure and portray Chinesepeople in a more positive light."

When asked about his dream role, he laughed: "Besides playing the love interest of Jessica Alba, I don't know. I don't think there is an ultimate role; it is more about moving on and exploring as many characters possible."

Be sure to stay tuned to Egoli because Fok's character, Liu, is part of a huge kidnapping plot at The Manor.
