Acclaimed stand-up comedian-turned-big-screen actor and Bollywood Star, Vir Das, is currently touring his international smash-hit comedy, Battle of DaSexes, in South Africa. He chats to Tonight about some of his travels across the world...

First holiday memory?

Egypt with my parents. I studied so hard and learned so much by the time I got there I knew more than the tour guides. Was that annoying kid with his hand always up.

Favourite place in South Africa?

Cape Town. Just love it there. The food and the wine...mainly the wine....I'm told I have a wonderful time when I'm there. I don't remember much but the pictures are rather entertaining.

Best holiday?

I go up to the North of India to Ladakh once a year. Rent a motorcycle and drive around for a few days. Clear my head and get away from civilization.

What have you learnt from your travels?

Look around instead of taking so many selfies and carry antacids.

Ideal travelling companion?

A notebook and a pencil.

Beach bum, culture vulture or adrenalin junkie?

Beach junkie. I love to surf. Any beach with good waves is my shanti spot.

Greatest travel luxury?

Being able to dress like a bum while traveling first class. I like that no one thinks I belong there.

Holiday reading?

Music. Always music. And I write on holidays. Not much reading.

Where has seduced you?

Africa. Anywhere in Africa. I grew up there. It's in my blood. It never leaves me.

Worst travel experience?

Once got stuck on an island in Mexico because my immigration papers for the USA. expired.

Best hotel?

The Taj West End in Bengaluru.

Favourite walk, swim, ride or drive?

Bali surfing beaches and the beaches in Tamil Nadu.

Best meal abroad?

Pies in an old English pub. Nothing like vintage steak and ale pie for me.

Favourite city?

Gotta say London. I write best there in the winters.
