GIG OF THE WEEK

Johnny Clegg

The Lyric Theatre, Gold Reef Casino (tonight and tomorrow)

At 9pm today, Johnny Clegg will take to the Lyric Theatre stage to do what he does best.

While some artists sing and others dance, Clegg does both and more. He is a storyteller, and a funny one at that. A colleague of mine once said everyone needs to see Clegg at least once in their lifetime. After seeing him for the first time a few years ago, I can guarantee that if you have not seen him live it is in your best interests to do so.

Clegg’s lyrical content is largely political, to a point that you feel as if you are at a rally, but his presentation is unique. You’ll feel as if you are at a comedy show when he does his jokes about the story of his life. If you listen closely, you will realise that he does the talking after an excellent performance that demanded a lot of strength. So in these rest periods there is a lot of narration about who he was, why he does music and sometimes how he wrote the song coming up next. The man |has done so many songs that have made it on to the local and inter-|national charts.

Over the years he has grabbed the political bull by the horns in areas he felt people were being failed. So don’t be surprised if you get teary-eyed as you sing along to Asim’bonanga. There is also a song dedicated to the Zimbabwe situation, but we all know everyone will be waiting for Scatterlings of Africa.

We are unsure when Clegg will play music from his latest album Human, which is ambitious as it attempts to be his finest work yet.

No words can describe what a Clegg show is like, so you owe it to yourself to check this one out. The shows start at 9pm today and tomorrow. Tickets: R161 to R263 at Computicket or call 011 248 5000. See www.goldreefcity.co.za for more info. – Munyaradzi Vomo
