Despite the title of his new show, Cape-centric comedian Marc Lottering does work on Sundays after all. A quick glance at his performance schedule proves that.
And, in reality, Lottering never really stops working. Even on a lazy Sunday afternoon, ice nestling in a comforting glass of whisky and with his newspaper at the ready, his sharp eye delights in the uniquely South African quirks that simultaneously infuriate us and, especially when coaxed into life by an accomplished funnyman, make us laugh.
I Don’t Work on Sundays! sees Lottering in pure stand-up mode, which is a bit of a departure from the lovingly crafted Cape Flats characters on which he made his comedy bones.
The inherent humour is still there, but this is more about the real Marc Lottering, armed with a raised eyebrow, a super-sharp wit, and a healthy pinch of salt.
Our crazy country has the comedian blessed with a wealth of material, and Lottering’s spin on everyday life and the major headlines make for a show in which the laugh-out-loud moments barely leave you with enough time to catch your breath.
He laces his performance with plenty of gems, like why Julius Malema is a bit like a Jehovah’s Witness at the door, what Joburg traffic means to a Capetonion (red traffic lights are simply a suggestion, he says), and how parts of the alphabet are disappearing in Durban.
I attended a Thursday performance on a bitterly cold night, but the Studio Theatre was still packed. If that is anything to go by, tickets will be at a premium for the rest of his run. I’m just saying…
