Local singer and songwriter Cofield Mundi will be opening the Nelson Mandela 46664 concert on Saturday ahead of some of the biggest international and local acts this country has ever seen on the same stage.

Mundi who has been playing live gigs around her home town of Cape Town since the release of her debut album Ceremony in 2003, has also been busy on the follow-up album. The new album, Spent, is due for release at the end of the year.

Mundi has been chosen to open the concert being held at Fancourt in George ahead of acts like Queen, Annie Lennox, India Arie and Katie Melua. The other South African acts that will be sharing the stage include Prime Circle, Karen Zoid, Johnny Clegg, Black Sunshine, Mandoza and Danny K.

Ceremony, which featured the hits River and Give it Up, was nominated for a Sama award for Best Pop Album last year and eight of the 12 tracks on the album still enjoy radio play around the country.

The opportunity to be the opening act for the 46664 concert has been "a huge thing", says Mundi who also admits that she has been doing more live performance over the last 12 months while still working on her new album.

"I quite enjoy performing when I get into it, so it will be a great thrill to be the first act and get everyone in the mood," she says.

While fans can expect some of her more well-known songs, Mundi says she will also be performing new material from the upcoming album.

"I'm still writing and recording songs for the new album and it's just been a great experience. I have also done a song with Neo from Black Sunshine which is wonderful. But for my performance, I will be only doing my own songs," she says.
