From Best Actress Oscar to Stephen King mini series, South African actresses are making their mark.

Grammy Award singer/actor Tsidii Le Loka, who has also appeared in Law And Order, is currently one of the stars in the horror house six-part mini-series Rose Red on M-Net, Thursday nights.

The thriller, set in a haunted mansion built in 1907, features Le Loka playing Sukeena, servant and confidante to the wife of the owner, Ellen Rimbauer (Julia Campbell), in life and death.

The plot sees Ellen spending her life adding on to the house's bizarre rooms like a mirror-floored library and stairs leading nowhere.

Then she mysteriously disappears into the house.

"There's a spiritual connection between Ellen and Sukeena," observes the multi-award-winning Broadway actress who originated the role of Rafiki in the Broadway production of Disney's The Lion King.

She won The Drama Desk Award for this role, among others and also notched up Tony and Outer Critics Circle nominations.

In 1999 Le Loka played the role of Bloody Mary in the musical South Pacific, for which she received a Leon Rabin Award nomination for Best Actress in a Musical.

Le Loka has also performed on Harry Belafonte's International Tour and at the Rain Forest Benefit Concert (with Sting, Sir Elton John, Billy Joel and Madonna).

Le Loka graduated magna cum laude for both of her bachelor degrees, in Economics and in Music, from the University of Massachusetts in 1997, having also attended Berklee College of Music. She also studied drama at Trinity College in London.
