Durban - Fifteen people were injured after the taxi they were in overturned, coming to rest on its side on the N3 Durban bound near Warwick Avenue at about 1pm on Friday.

Garrith Jamieson Operations Director of Rescue Care said paramedics arrived on the scene to find that a single taxi had overturned coming to rest on its side in the emergency lane. 

"Multiple casualties were found on the scene and more ambulances were dispatched. Fifteen people sustained various injuries and were stabilised on the scene before being transported to various Durban Hospitals," he said.

At this stage the events leading up to the collision are unknown. Police were on the scene and are investigating further, he said.

Meanwhile in Pietermaritzburg a man, believed to be in his 40s, was killed on Friday morning following an alleged hit-and-run on the N3 highway after the Church Street offramp.

ER24 spokesman Russell Meiring said paramedics arrived on the scene at 11.44am to find the body of the man lying in the middle of the road.

"Paramedics assessed him and found that he had sustained numerous injuries and showed no signs of life. Nothing could be done for him and he was declared dead," he said.

The vehicle that hit the man was not found on the scene. Local authorities were on the scene and will be investigating further.
