Curated by Phumzile N Twala, the Black Hair Matters Exhibition held at Eyethu Art Space in Mofolo, Soweto recently saw two artists showcase their natural hairstyle artistries.

Lebohang Motaung and Nikiwe Dlova showcased their latest works of natural hair which seek to explore notions around black hair identity as well as the strands of this complex story.

The exhibitors used art forms such as canvas and digital print, as a catalyst for opening up a dialogue about how black hair is perceived, embraced, experimented with and celebrated.

For most people who love braids, here are top 5 hairstyles you can try with your natural hair.

Fringe cornrows

The "Pabala" hairdo, which is fringe cornrows with beads on the ends, is trendy and can be worn by people of all ages. This hairstyle is great for someone with a bigger forehead.

Benny and Betty

The '90's babies know better about this hairstyle. It was almost every girl's signature hairstyle back in primary school. The Benny and Betty hairdo is back and Nikiwe Dlova has modernised it into a pineapple shaper in the 4-Betty evolves hair series.

The circular cornrows, with a handle-like thick braid on top, is for dramatic people who like exploring with their hair. These extraordinary braids are perfect for fashion weeks.

Twirl up-do

The twirl up-do that Lebohang Motaung best describes as "my expressive crown," is a triple deck high bun. This hairdo, which sits as a firm crown, is best worn with African print maxi dress, a perfect look for an award ceremony.

Side cornrows

Side cornrows are nothing new, but the way Motaung styles them by adding pearls and hoop braids is what makes it relatively unique. The gap between the lines is great as it gives the scalp some space to breathe.
