Laboratory research in 2010 found coriander oil could kill campylobacter, a common but nasty food poisoning bacterium.

Previous research showed a component in the herb can also kill salmonella, which causes food poisoning.

A chemical called dodecanal, which is found in the leaves and seeds isthought to have antibacterial properties.

Animal research has also suggested the herb may help reduce ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol while increasing the so-called ‘good’ HDL type thought to protect against heart disease.

Meanwhile, the herb oregano provides a high concentration of iron — there’s more than 10 per cent of the recommended daily amount in a couple of heaped teaspoons (4g) of the dried version.

Oregano also contains carvacrol, a powerful antifungal agent. A U.S. study found that carvacrol inhibited the growth of Candida albicans (the fungus that causes thrush infections) better than a common antifungal medication.

Sprinkle oregano into homemade ratatouille and pasta sauces.
