If trendsetters have their way then your summer cocktail at the end of the year is going to be filled with rum.

Last summer it was gin that set the cocktail trend and now rum is taking over with a sprited, Cuban twist.

The so-called “Cuban-Effect” has been steadily building in 2016 and now with more premium rums on the market the spirit is only going to become more popular.

Brand ambassador for Havana Club, Meimi Sanchez says: “Rum in South Africa has long been associated with mixed drinks like rum and Coke or cocktails.”

If not mixed correctly rum can be a strong spirit that stings the back of your throat and overpowers any other flavours in your drink.

Sanchez says that making a rum cocktail at home doesn’t have to be a daunting task: “Depending on the occasion or time of day there are many ways to consume rum.”

She adds: “Havana Club Añejo 7 Años. Both the Canchanchara and the Rum Old Fashion cocktails are perfect for any drinking occasion and can easily replicated at home.”
