We spoke to the Chilli Chocolate Chefs, Zainab and Faatimah and learnt a little more about this blessed month of Ramadaan as well as what their preferences are during this special time.
What’s on your Suhoor (breakfast) table?
Chef Zainab:
My favourite is to have avocado on a toasted sour dough bread.
I also have a bowl of oats, with dates and nuts.
To drink I have a cup of tea and some water.
Chef Faatimah:
I start with All-Bran flakes and also have Naan toast with butter, a banana and a few dates with a glass of milk.
How do you keep fit during Ramadaan?
Chef Zainab:
After the morning prayer I go for a short walk in the sun to get the body and mind moving.
Chef Faatimah
I try to eat healthy and include some less strenuous exercise in my day like stretching.
What’s your favourite late night indulgence?
Chef Zainab:
Our Nutella brownies. They are amazing!
Chef Faatimah:
Definitely ice cream!
Deep Fried or Air-fried?
Chef Zainab:
Deep fried- a samoosa has got to be deep fried!
Chef Faatimah:
A bit of both - it’s all about balance during this month
Your typical Iftar (dinner) would be?
Chef Zainab:
I like interesting dishes and this month gives me a chance to test them out.
BUT I would say Labneh with Cucumber and Zatar, as well as, Haleem.
Chef Faatimah:
Just a few Samoosas, some Haleem and whatever my mum has prepared!
How to keep healthy this month?
There’s quite a lot of things that one can do stay healthy… our tips would be:
- Never skip Suhoor
- Stay hydrated… make sure you have enough water between Iftaar & Suhoor to avoid dehydration when you begin your fast.
- Make fresh fruit, vegetables and salad a part of your diet.
- Cut down on sugary drinks, junk food and deep-fried foods.
- Walk for a few minutes in the sun.
