Boerekos with a Twist is a cookbook straight from the heart of its author Annelien Pienaar.
Like so many women across South Africa, she is the custodian of tips, hints and kitchen hacks that have been passed down from the women in her family.
This book is a glimpse into Pienaar’s childhood and the food that peppered her youth.
In 2015 she took up the mantle, quite unknowingly, when she created her blog Boerekos met 'n Twist as well as populating her Facebook page with recipes.
The response was overwhelming and this book is proof of the popularity of her recipes.

It would have been far easier for Pienaar to merely create an archive of recipes that we can all associate with “Boere tradition” but she has done so much more than that.
In her book, she innovates and reinvents classical dishes.
There are the jams, jellies and koeksisters you’d expect to find but then there are some surprising recipes like a Cape Malay yellow rice and a few salads.
Overall the book is a treasure trove of recipes from South African kitchens that you might not have been able to see or learn from.
