There is now scientific proof that a glass of wine before bedtime, could help you lose weight.

A study done by scientists at the Washington State University and Harvard Medical School discovered the chemical resveratrol which inhibits weight gain.

On the Washington State University website,  Rebecca Phillips the University Communications science writer says: "Washington State University scientists have shown that berries, grapes and other fruits convert excess white fat into calorie-burning beige fat, providing new strategies for the prevention and treatment of obesity."

She adds: "In the study, mice were fed a high fat diet. Those receiving resveratrol in amounts equivalent to 12 ounces of fruit per day for humans gained about 40 percent less weight than control mice. Resveratrol is a polyphenol, a type of antioxidant found in most fruits."

The Harvard study showed that of the twenty thousand people surveyed, the non-drinkers gained the "significant amount of weight"

If you have to choose between red and white wine, pour a glass of red.

The highest percentages of Resveratrol is found on the skins of red grapes, so it would be the best option for an evening tipple.
