Cocktail: Frozen Hot Toddy

Price: R39

Ingredients: Lemon and lime purée, honey and ginger syrup, white rum with a side of melted honey and dark rum.

It may be frozen, but Beefcakes’s creative take on the winter favourite, the Hot Toddy, is worth a sip – even if just to soak up the camp vibes and topless staff of the burger bar.

Establishment owner Andrew Eglin says the drink is a blended frozen drink served in a latte glass. A dark rum and melted honey mix is floated above the frozen part. It’s best to mix it on serving as the hot mix floats below.

Cold as it is, the drink is soothing. Rum is a good replacement for brandy, a liquor that can be overpowering. The Frozen Hot Toddy has a clear kick to it, though. Upon mixing it, expect a deep gold colour. Being cold, it goes down quickly.

Eglin jokes the drink is popular with sick people and those feeling the winter chill.

He describes Beefcakes as fun, camp, entertaining and vibey.

Located on the city’s so-called “Pink Strip”, it’s a popular gay entertainment destination.

Smoking is outside and WiFi is available.

It is open from 6pm to late, seven days a week.

Activities at Beefcakes include Bitchy Bingo on Tuesday nights from 8.30pm (R30 entrance), and drag shows on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8.30pm (R40 entrance).

The Locker Room is a facility for hire below the restaurant. It is available for private functions and has its own bar and toilets.

It is decorated like a sports locker room after a victory. The showers, I am told, are for decorative purposes. – Weekend Argus
