If skating and surfing is not your thing, then this casual health bar is easy to miss. The area is noticeably small, but very tidy, with a few bodyboards and fresh fruits on display.

The menus are easy to read on an exposed brick wall behind the counter.

Fresch Foods was started as a pop-up stall at various markets in 2015 by owner Adam Reilly when he was 19. After much success, Reilly opened the doors to his café in Muizenberg at the popular Surfer’s Corner, before relocating to Long Street in the city centre.

Reilly discovered the health food trend while on vacation in Indonesia.

I was impressed by the large selection on offer, including coffee, freshly pressed juices, smoothie bowls, smoothies, bagels and salads.

I was careful with my choice of smoothie, because I have never had one I enjoyed. I wanted one with fruits that I love so the taste would mask the texture.

The Mango Magic was my first choice. This smoothie consists of mango, banana, coconut and dates.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t available so I had the Infamous Acai instead, with acai, blueberries, banana and honey.

With a choice between a normal smoothie and a smoothie bowl, I opted for the latter. All bowl smoothies are topped with fresh fruits and granola, chai seeds and coconut flakes.

Mine was topped with strawberries and banana with the coconut flakes.

For the first time I really enjoyed a smoothie, especially the hard and soft textures of the dates and granola. Perfect on a hot day.

Other options on the menu include Piesang Power, consisting of banana, macadamia nut butter, cacao nibs, almond milk and cinnamon, and Ayoba Berries, which has mixed berries, banana, buchu water, mint leave, chai seeds and honey.

I also had a Power toasted bagel with chicken, mozzarella, basil pesto, tomato and rocket. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Prices for smoothies range from R40 to R50, and a bowl costs R60. The bagels range in price from R18 to R60 and salad bowls and wraps cost R42 to R58.

Fresch Food is at 309 Long Street and is open from Monday to Friday, 7.30am to 6pm, and Saturdays from 9am to 3pm.
