Sunday brunch at Mulberry & Prince

Nothing screams “Sunday” better than brunch, and there’s a fabulous new place to do it in the city centre.

Well, the restaurant is not new, but the Sunday brunches are. Mulberry & Prince, the uber stylish place just off Bree Street, is now open for two sittings of daytime feasting between 10am and 2pm every weekend.

In the evenings, Mulberry & Prince offers a superlative dining experience enhanced by beautiful interior design featuring work by Cape Town-based artist, Kurt Pio. It’s a truly gorgeous space, with raw brick walls and the repeated use of the most delicate shade of dusty pink, and rose gold glass. A small courtyard at the back will soon be open on sunny days.

The dinner menu is all about elevated New-American cuisine with a focus on shared plates. Brunch is the antithesis with hearty single portions and delectably rich, decadent choices. This is rib-sticking comfort food at its zenith.

Co-owners and chefs Cornel Mostert and Cynthia Rivera met while studying at the Culinary Institute Of America, and the menu pays homage to Rivera’s New York roots. Where else can you get biscuits and gravy? And by biscuits, I mean the US-style which are like what we know as scones. Here they are made with buttermilk, swimming in a bowl of house-made (a much better word for a restaurant to use than “homemade”) thick sausage gravy.

Another staple from Stateside is chicken and waffles with Texas style hot sauce. Or a huge stack of buttermilk pancakes (the thick kind, the size of your head) with a dollop of the most heavenly whipped strawberry butter, and a drizzle of maple syrup. The French toast is made with brioche soaked in nutmeg custard, served with honey butter and maple syrup. And there’s grits too (coarse corn meal).

Maybe you still want to be all traditional, so of course you can have eggs any way you want them, with hash browns or broiled tomatoes, and lots of bacon.

“We wanted to create the kind of brunch place we’d like to go to,” Rivera said. “This is very symbolic of country American breakfasts and it’s very grungy - the complete opposite of what we do for dinner.”

Mostert added: “We work the whole week so this is what we want to get our faces into when we’re done.” For more information or to make a reservation for dinner (Wednesdays to Saturdays) or Sunday Brunch, email [email protected] or call 0214223301.
