Growing up in an Indian family where food was a constant feature, it’s no surprise that Lee-Andra Govender chose a career in the culinary industry.

Govender, a self-taught pastry chef, started working in the hot kitchen after completing her culinary studies, but she soon discovered her love for pastries.

She joined the Table Bay Hotel in the Waterfront at the beginning of August and is in the process of launching a new high tea menu which will include some of her favourite classic dishes.

Govender says she loves adding her own twist to some of her favourite classic dishes, like apple pie and lemon meringue.

"As much as I love keeping up with trends, I also want to create my own stuff. My favourite pastry chef is Cherish Finden. She's from London and she loves taking old-fashioned desserts and just putting her own twist or trend on it," says Govender.

Watch as Govender talks about her journey to becoming a chef.
