Stellenbosch comes to Joburg

Johannesburg - While other food hubs come and go, Stellenbosch gives Cape Town some stiff competition as the country’s gourmet capital.

On October 30, the winelands top restaurants are coming to Joburg at the Stellenbosch at Summer Place event – a “pop-up” collaboration of restaurants, wine producers, art, music and fashion.

Hosted by Sanlam Private Investments, the event, which is now in its fourth year, will see a more honed and focused grapes-gourmet-and-gallery affair.

Every wine will be matched with a signature dish in a unique ambience, expertly matched by wine judge and former Wine magazine editor, Christian Eedes, with attractions ranging from music to intimate fashion shows, or private sessions with art experts.

This year’s chef line-up includes Bertus Basson of Overture, Michael Broughton of Terroir, George Jardine of Jordan Restaurant; Christiaan Campbell of Delaire Graff Estate, and Grégory Czarnecki of Waterkloof restaurant.

Bertus’s Overture restaurant at Hidden Valley wine estate has won five Eat Out Top 10 awards since it opened its doors in 2007 (and is as good, if not better, than their top achiever). He is also a judge on the popular South African reality cooking show on television, The Ultimate Braai Master.

Michael heads up Terroir restaurant at Kleine Zalze wine estate, which also consistently does well in that top 10 restaurant ranking.

Grégory, who has cooked in some of the finest Michelin star restaurants in France and more than deserves a top 10 ranking, lends fine dining flair to Waterkloof wine estate’s signature “restaurant in the sky”, while George of Jordan Restaurant is another top 10 regular, and Christiaan is executive chef of the two fabulous Delaire Graff Estate restaurants.
