The Silo District at the V&A Waterfront is fast becoming Cape Town’s trendy food and lifestyle hub.

Located opposite the newly opened Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, The Yard at Silo is the new kid on this trendy block and opens its doors this Friday. Named after the surrounding dockyards, The Yard is a concept store-cum-bistro-bar that offers a retail and dining experience under one roof. The retail section features a range of urban homeware, accessories, decor and even a few pieces of clothing.

The delicatessen houses a selection of fine chocolates, preserves, home-made pastas and cheeses. The deli also has a food-on-the-go section with smoothies, ice teas, flavoured water and coffee for when you are looking for a quick bite to eat. As you make your way further into the food section, you will find a salad bar and warm buffet which has a different offering daily. Adjacent to the buffet, is the marble top drinks bar with a range of craft beers, wines and spirits.

The various sections seamlessly merges one into the other as you make your way through the store.

The exposed cement walls with large, colourful art pieces, leather seats in the dining area, and even the waiters denim aprons adds to the trendy feel of the space.

The expose light fixtures and piping adds to the industrial feel, while a few pieces of decor and the glassware adds a touch of elegance.

Even the food offerings dare to be different with a selection of Mediterranean, Indian, Oriental and Middle East inspired meals on offer.

Pan Seared Kingklip

If you are going to enjoy the full dining experience, you won’t be disappointed with the Raan-E Yard on the mains menu. This sharing platter for two is a whole leg of lamb slow roasted with yoghurt and brown onions served with house dhal and naan.

There is also a fish offering which is a pan seared kingklip served with sauce vierge, wilted spinach and a potato purée.

The summer gnocchi with carrots, asparagus, peas, edamame cheese, summer truffle butter and pecorino cheese, is another good choice.

The dining area accommodates for both casual lunches and supper or fine dining with a long table and seating booths.

Co-owner Abigail Bisogno says the inspiration for The Yard comes from her wine farm background.

“The inspiration for The Yard came from my wine farm background, and my creation of the Spice Route Destination in Paarl, together with my partner's experience in the food industry over the last 15 years,” she says.

Owners Abigail Bisogno and GP Singh

Bisogno and her partner, GP Singh come from very different backgrounds, but just like the contrasting touches throughout their store they formed a perfect collaboration.

They wanted to combine their love for fusion and collaboration in the formation of The Yard.

She says: “GP and I share a vision and passion for Euro-Asian cuisine that seeks to unify Asia-Indian-European flavours,”

“We intend to make our new space in the Silo District the destination where this type of food and our unique brand of retail can be experienced and enjoyed!”
