Increase in hospital patients due to alcohol related incidents

Published Jun 9, 2020

Following the uproar to lift the alcohol ban during the national lockdown, hospitals in the Western Cape have seen a spike in patients due to alcohol-related incidents.

The Western Cape is still considered the coronavirus epicenter of the country with over 50 000 infections and 1 080 deaths, and the added alcohol-related admissions are adding more pressure as hospitals prepare for the next wave of outbreaks.

“We have spent all this time and energy to make sure that our health response is ready, we fought really hard to make sure that we get to level 3 in this province,” said Western Cape Premier Alan Winde.

Meanwhile, there’s been rumours on social media platforms that the sale of alcohol will be banned again, but director general of Government Communication and Information Systems Phumla Williams said the rumours are fake news.
