CAPE TOWN -
Over 100 000 indigent Grade 12 learners could be in line to receive free 32-inch HD LED TVs from the Universal Service and Access Agency of South Africa (Usaasa).
Usaasa is a state-owned organisation that’s looking to connect learners in rural areas to the digital world, with TVs to be used for virtual classrooms.
“Virtual classrooms being set up by the government will not reach indigent households that do not have set-top boxes installed or those that do not have TVs,” said the agency.
“That will lead to unreachable households being left behind in their studies and end up not being ready to write and pass their final examinations.
Usaasa published a tender for local manufacturers that can supply 32-inch HD LED TVs that need to have built-in speakers, remote control, and onboard digital runners to receive educational material.
Bids for the tender closes on July 2 and the Usaasa are looking to deliver the TVs over two months.
