Plans to reopen cinemas underway

A new set of regulations highlighted governments plans to reopen cinemas which enforce strict spacing between customers.

Like restaurants, theatres and cinemas are not allowed to operate under level 3 lockdown and the sector has also taken a knock.

The South African government is looking to follow the likes of the United States, France and Japan where theatres will start operating from this month.

“The sector (cinemas and theatres) has experienced hardships and requested that consideration be given to its inclusion in the exemption,” read the new regulations.

“The Department has received representation from stakeholders in the cinema

exhibition industry on the safe reopening of the sector and is engaging in a process

with stakeholders and the National Department of Health to determine the appropriate

protocols for re-opening.”

The new regulations allow for competitors to negotiate with each other and with landlords to arrange for rent holidays.
