CAPE TOWN- Applications are now open for South Africa’s unemployed to access the Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, worth R350 per month for six months. The grants is aimed at assisting vulnerable citizens with the new electronic applications process.
South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) CEO Busisiwe Memela-Khambula said that the grants are due to be paid out on Friday to any South African over 18 who does not have any other form of income, and does not receive any other form of government support.
Memela-Khambula made the announcement this morning with the Minister of Social Development, Lindiwe Zulu.
President Cyril Ramaphosa announced over a week ago that the SRD grant would be available to South Africans who qualify.
Sassa offices opened today, however, Memela-Khambula said that services will remain limited due to staff capacity still at 30%. Staff will today and tomorrow assist elderly applicants for social grants, while staff will on Wednesday and Thursday process child support grants.

Who can apply for the R350 grant?
Persons need to be above the age of 18
Applicants can’t be receiving any other social grants
Not persons receiving any unemployment insurance benefit
Not persons receiving a stipend from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme
Not persons who reside in a government funded or subsidised institution
