These sectors are hiring during lockdown

Published May 31, 2020

Despite the lowering of the national lockdown and the reopening up of various sectors, the South African job market continues to be impacted by Covid-19 according to job website Adzuna.

Adzuna is a search engine for jobs and their stats have shown a decline in job adverts between 21 and 38 percent since the start of the year.

And with the closure of schools, they’ve also reported a 48 percent reduction in teaching jobs compared to last year.

“Unlike most other countries, South Africa has seen a massive drop in the number of cleaning and domestic help jobs.

“This sector has seen very few new jobs being posted since the end of March. The industry has had a decline in online postings of -85 percent,” said Adzuna country manager, Jesse Green.

While Adzuna predicts a further decline in job advertising, adding that jobs in restaurants and hospitality are almost non-existent, that there’s now demand in grocery stores, logistics, customer service, warehousing and healthcare.

“A role as a marketing consultant might not be on the cards within a hospitality company right now. But the same role might be available at a pharmaceutical company,” said Green.

“Although there were just under 60,000 live ads on Adzuna in the middle of May, 30percent of those jobs were located in Gauteng and 29percent of all jobs in South Africa were based in the Western Cape.

“This means that Gauteng and the Western Cape are still the country’s economic hotspots for landing a job,” he said.
