London - The Baz Luhrmann remake of The Great Gatsby will hit the big screen later this year — but if you can’t wait for a return to the glamour of the Jazz Age, be inspired by the Twenties and Thirties art deco movement and infuse your home with this sophisticated style right now.

“Great Gatsby-inspired design is set to be a big influence on interiors throughout this year and into 2013,” says Philippa Prinsloo, senior designer for Home at John Lewis. “The glitz and glamour of the Twenties and Thirties is a perfect antidote to the austere trends which have dominated in recent years. References such as mirrored surfaces, shimmering metallics and sleek, smooth finishes are key.”

Glossy, high-shine surfaces instantly add a touch of Gatsby bling to your surroundings and mirrored furniture is easy to come by with High Street stalwarts such as Next and Sainsbury’s offering inexpensive collections. Luxury online store is a great place to get started, too, with dressing tables, black consoles and circular mirrors that perfectly capture the art deco vibe.

Offset the shiny metallics with a palette of rich golds and copper, accented with jewel-like highlights such as deep turquoise, plum and jade. Make a feature wall with a bank of striking geometric-print wallpaper in bold monochrome (if you dare) and don’t be afraid to pepper your room with stylised images of aeroplanes, cars, cruise liners and skyscrapers.

“Take a foxtrot into the Twenties style this year,” enthuses Wendy Neville, head of marketing at the London Transport Museum which has just issued a range of colourful 1920s prints. “Think flappers, art deco details and girls in drop-waist dresses being charmed by dapper gents.” - Daily Mail
