London - Once upon a time, romantic gestures might have involved champagne, rose petals and mini-breaks in Paris.

Now, it seems, the best a woman can hope for is a man who puts the bins out, makes the bed and leaves the toilet seat down.

A poll has revealed the gestures that modern men deem to be romantic – but you could be forgiven for feeling that some of them could be rather more accurately described as pragmatic.

While old favourites such as candlelit dinners and buying flowers still make the list, so too does doing the washing up, cleaning the toilet, handing over the remote control and putting a load of washing on.

Looking after the children, remembering birthdays and pushing the vacuum cleaner around the house are also among the things that men class as romantic in 2014.

The poll also revealed that seven out of ten men try to be romantic only when they are on holiday with their partner.

Still, there is some hope for weary women – as compliments, massages, foot rubs, breakfast in bed and running her a bath also made the list of romantic acts.

Others also rated a kiss or hug goodbye, leaving notes and opening a door for their partner as important gestures.

A spokesman for hotelier Sandals Resorts, which commissioned the survey of 1,000 men, said: ‘These days it seems just helping with everyday chores or remembering their partner’s birthday is considered romantic by the modern man.

‘But while these things are important, both parties in a relationship should also make an effort to keep the romance alive.’

Almost three-quarters of the men polled admitted they could make more effort in the romance department, while 85 percent said their relationship could benefit from a holiday or mini-break. Some 37 percent said this is because it is easier to be romantic when they are away from everyday life. - Daily Mail
