It happens to many of us and we have to remind ourselves to make the effort to be romantic every now and then.

So when she decided we were in need of a much deserved romantic getaway, we didn’t have to look further than the Oyster Box Hotel in Durban.

Set in one of the best locations in KwaZulu-Natal and boasting spectacular views over the warm Indian Ocean, this iconic five-star hotel is by far as fancy as they come.

As we entered the hotel, we couldn’t help but fall in love with its opulence and exclusivity - it was almost as though we had stepped back in time in this colonial-style setting with its high ceiling fans, tasteful art, luxurious antique furniture and a level of service second to none.

We were offered sparkling wine, fruit juice and a chilled bottled water at reception during the check in, while the concierge handled the delivery of our suitcases to the room.

Our room was on the second floor and boasted breathtaking views of the ocean with the famous red and white lighthouse and the popular uMhlanga promenade below.

Leading off our room, a small private balcony with a comfortable seating area offered the opportunity for us to unwind, savour a glass of wine and enjoy the fresh air and sights.

The room itself was spacious with a king-size four-poster bed, all the basic amenities such as hairdryer, kettle, a fully stocked fridge and snack cupboard, television.

We were treated to complimentary treats in the room - a delicious pack of my favourite macaroons and nougat biscuits to accompany tea.

The personalised service is also another point to mention as this is certainly one of the many reasons why I would return to this luxurious haven on the east coast.

In fact, the friendly and accommodating staff are only too happy to cater to any request you may have, including bringing me a more comfortable pillow at 2am.

Oyster Box Hotel offers a romantic turndown service in your room on request - think rose petals, chocolates, champagne, etc.

Breakfast at the hotel is phenomenal with an unrivalled cold and hot variety including sushi and oysters.
