London - The effects of dandruff go beyond unsightly flakes of dead skin on your lapels – it can ruin your self-esteem.

A third of those with the condition have turned down invitations because they felt so self-conscious, research has revealed.

Half the population will suffer from dandruff at some point, and a fifth have even been bullied or verbally abused about it.

The British Skin Foundation, which surveyed almost 400 people, said dandruff could cause psychological distress, lower self-esteem and reduce quality of life.

Alex Clarke, an expert in the psychology of appearance, said sufferers can become so worried that others might notice their condition that they avoid socialising. Others go out – but drink too much to compensate for their anxiety. She added that many people think it is fair game to make remarks about others’ appearance.

In other cases, even trying to help can be hurtful. For instance, brushing dandruff off a shoulder can embarrass a sufferer.

Dr Clarke, of the University of the West of England, said: “Feeling self-conscious about how you look can limit your willingness to participate in activities and live life to the full.”
