London - She wore a £9 000 (about R167 000) Valentino evening dress to her friend Misha Nonoo’s wedding but it was the Duchess of Sussex’s earrings that caught the eye.

Now it can be revealed the decorative gold pieces cost £5 (about R90).

They were picked up from a vintage stall at London’s Portobello Market by an unnamed friend four years ago and borrowed by Meghan to wear to the lavish nuptials in Rome on Friday.

A source said: "The duchess has long admired the earrings and wanted to borrow them, then she found the perfect dress to wear them with!"

Meghan and Prince Harry – and their baby son Archie – will land in South Africa on Monday for a 10-day official tour.

The couple will begin and end their trip with engagements in townships in Cape Town and Johannesburg. In between, Harry will carry out solo visits to Botswana, Angola and Malawi, leaving his wife and son in Cape Town.

Later this week Meghan will attend an event with a local group that helps mothers living with HIV where she is expected to bring some of Archie’s hand-me downs for those in need, as well as colouring books and pens.

A source said the duke and duchess were inundated with gifts for Archie "but one little baby can only wear so many clothes and he’s growing fast".

The couple are flying in to Cape Town on a commercial flight on Monday, with no official arrival ceremony. It is believed they will be staying at the High Commissioner’s residence in the city.
