If there’s one clothing item everyone (young and old) should own, is a good pair of jeans. As most of you know, finding a good pair of jeans can often be a challenge, and when you finally find the perfect pair the price tag might leave a hole in your pocket.

So you could consider the perfect pair of jeans an investment, and if you’re a lover of jeans you probably have a collection in different colours and styles! In order to get the most wear out of your beloved jeans and make them last forever, it’s important to take good care of them.

Here are a few tips on how to care for your jeans.

1. For those who hate laundry day, you’ll be happy to know that your jeans don’t need to be washed too often. That’s more like of an instruction than a suggestion. Don’t wash your jeans often!

In case you’re wondering what “not often” is, washing your jeans every 4 to 5 wears is just fine- more often will make the colour fade faster. And let’s face it, the slightly scruffy, worn-in look is so much cooler than the stiff and squeaky clean.

2. As much as we love the scruffy look, let’s not push it to the point of filthy! At some point, you will need to wash them. Come wash day there are 2 important things to remember. Don’t forget to turn your jeans inside out. The water has to be cold to help prevent them from fading. If it’s new jeans, and it’s the first wash, add white vinegar and a pinch of salt to the soapy water. This prevents the colour from fading and the vinegar will help the fabric retain shape.

3. This part the anti-laundry crew won’t like at all but bare in mind you’re doing this to preserve your beloved jeans. You have to wash your jeans by hand. Not to worry though. There’s no scrubbing involved (unless it’s really dirty). Simply place your jeans (which you’ve turned inside out) in soapy water and leave it to soak for an hour. Rinse in cold water. Then allow to air dry. That’s it!
