Movember is an annual event when guys grow their moustaches and beards during the month of November to raise awareness of men’s health issues, such as prostate and testicular cancer.

They start the month with a clean shave, then allow their moustaches and beards to grow out for the rest of the month.

For some men this might be easy. Especially those who grow a beard or moustache anyway. If you are one of the guys who prefer to be clean shaven this might be more challenging. I reckon some guys take full advantage of this month to just skip their usual morning shaving routine.

We’re nearing the end of November and if you’re one of the guys who’s now decided to embrace your newly-grown moustache and beard you will soon discover that’s not just a matter of letting your facial hair grow wild.

Not all guys can pull off a beard, never mind a moustache, without looking scruffy or like a lumberjack. Then there are some men who you can’t imagine without a beard or moustache.

Have you ever seen Lionel Richie without his mo? Hangover star Zach Galifianakis is almost unrecognisable without his full beard.

Deciding how to shape your moustache or trim your beard is as challenging as trying to decide on a hair cut. Choose the wrong one and you’re stuck with it for a week or two, depending on how fast your hair grows.

Here are a few shapes and celebrity looks to draw inspiration from.

The horseshoe: Also known as the “biker”, this bold moustache is full with vertical extensions grown down past the corners of the mouth, to the jawline.

The chevron:

Think Tom Selleck in Magnum PI. A thick, full moustache that covers most of the top lip.

The handlebar:

These curl upward at both ends. This is for the guy with a flare for the dramatic and has a bit more time for styling.

The walrus:

This is definitely not for the fainthearted or those who don’t mind having their entire top lips covered. The chevron on steroids.
