The Cape Winelands encompasses towns like Paarl, Stellenbosch and Franschhoek – and there are many things to keep you busy here. From wine-tasting ,authentic French food in Franschhoek and historical tours, this region needs a good few days to be properly enjoyed.
Avukile Mabombo, the Group Marketing Manager of Protea Hotels by Marriott and African Pride Hotels said that these towns get quite cold during the winter.
"The snow-capped mountains offer special scenic views - so I head out there for winter-warming meals in front of cosy warm fireplaces,” Mabombo says. He suggests 96 Winery Road between Somerset West and Stellenbosch is well worth a visit. If you’d like to enjoy traditional recipes of the area, try the Oak Leaf Restaurant at the Protea Hotel Stellenbosch Dorpshuis & Spa. If there’s no rain and you are there over the weekend, you can savour a range of foods at the many markets in the area: the Blaauwklippen Family Market is open on Sundays; on Friday nights and Sundays, you can enjoy the Lourensford Market near Somerset West; and the huge Root 44 Marketbetween Stellenbosch and Somerset West offers its products on both Saturdays and Sundays. Pop over to the Mooiberge Farm Stall when you’re at Root 44 to take home some of the area’s quality produce and wines.
