A female stevedore – a person employed at a dock to load and unload ships – was rescued on Monday from the Port of Durban, after falling off a ship in the Port.

National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) spokesperson Craig Lambinon said: “The woman was at the loading and off-loading of a ship at the berthing inside the port when she slipped and fell from the ships gangplank and into the water.”

NSRI Durban coxswain Paul Bevis rushed to assist the woman, after hearing Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) Port Control raising the alarm regarding the incident.

Fortunately Aqua-Tech Diving Services, who were working around the area, had responded with a standby diver who had rescued the 46-year-old woman and bought her to the harbour wall, where Bevis assisted with the co-ordination of medical treatment.

NetCare 911 ambulance services transported the female worker to hospital in a relatively stable condition.
