A truck driver – shot on the N3 on Monday afternoon – has died in hospital.

At approximately 3pm on Monday afternoon, Netcare 911 paramedics responded to reports that a truck driver had been shot on the N3 approximately 1km past the Mooi Toll Plaza on the way to Durban.

The man later died in hospital, said police.

“Another ambulance service was first to arrive at the scene and called Netcare 911 for Advanced Life Support assistance,” said Netcare's Nick Dollman’s in a statement.

He said reports from the scene alleged that the truck had come to a stop on the side of the highway when the incident occurred and that the male driver, believed to be approximately 30 years old, had been shot more than once.

Dollman said the victim had been in a critical condition and had sustained severe injuries.

“Advanced Life Support airway management protocols were followed and he was placed on a ventilator at the scene.

He was then transported by ambulance to hospital, under the constant care of the paramedic, for the urgent medical care that he required.”

Another man, believed to be the driver’s colleague, he said, escaped without injury.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said the victim had been approached by three armed men.

“At gunpoint the suspects demanded cash, cellphone before opening fire, wounding the victim on the head. He was taken to hospital where he later succumbed to his injury.

A case of murder was opened at Mooi River police station.”
