'07 Gixer gets twin pipes, extra weight

Cologne, Germany - Suzuki's eagerly waited 2007 GSX-R1000 has gained about 6kg over the 2006 model

Dry weight is up from 166kg to 172kg, mostly due to the new double-sided exhaust, which has a stubby tailpipe each side of the bike - a rarity on modern sportbikes - and apparently houses multiple catalytic converters to satisfy the latest emissions regulations.

The 2007 engine has the same 73.4mm bore and 59mm stroke as last year's model but Suzuki is claiming a significant increase in power, with the new engine mapping switch set to the wildest of the three available positions - standard, sport and "wet".

The last is probably a softer setting for riding in heavy rain or snow, where the bike's normal hair-trigger throttle would b a distinct disadvantage.

Suzuki quotes improved aerodynamics - similar to the 2006 GSX-R600 and 750 - to minimise the effect of the significant weight increase.

The GSX-R1000 K7 is expected to reach South Africa in February 2007; prices then.
