Cape Town - A motorcyclist was killed on impact on Wednesday night when he collided with a lamp-post on the M5 while allegedly overtaking cars on the left-hand shoulder of the road.

The biker, identified as Nigel Petersen, was riding home to Grassy Park after attending a memorial service for a fellow biker who died at the weekend. It is believed this biker committed suicide.

Another rider who witnessed the accident, said Petersen was riding to the left of the road and overtaking cars near the Ottery off-ramp when he hit the lamppost at about 9.40pm on Wednesday.

He was killed instantly and his motorcycle, a Suzuki GSX-R750, was destroyed. Petersen was part of a large group of bikers, including the Psychos club, heading home after the memorial service. He was not a club member.

Petersen was believed to have been recently married. His father, brother and wife were notified and arrived at the scene of the accident.
