Despite sub-zero temperatures almost 5 000 spectators filled the ice karting arena at Madonna di Campiglio in the Italian Alps on January for the 15th edition of Wroom, Ferrari's annual ice-racing challenge for the motoring media.

This year spectators had a rare opportunity to see Italy's four-wheeled superstars, the works Ferrari team of Michael Schumacher, Rubens Barrichello and test driver Luca Badoer take on the darlings of the motorcycling tifosi, Ducati factory riders Loris Capirossi and Carlos Checa - racing karts with studded tyres on ice.

Unfortunately Checa touched one of the studded kart tyres in practice and suffered some nasty cuts on his left hand, which ruled him out of the races.

After a few warm-up laps the Formula 1 and MotoGP stars put on a superb display of kart racing - on ice! - including a 20-lap final that ended in a dead heat between Shumi and Capirossi, which was adjudged to be an appropriate result by both organisers and spectators.

The event was was dedicated to the tsunami-hit populations of south Asia and the funds raised were donated to the Fondazione Terres des Hommes in Italy.
